Pearl's Hope
Providing transitional housing and an array of support services to promote self-reliance and financial stability.
Pearl Opel Thorpe had a vision, a hope, really, that a shelter for homeless women and their children could become a reality in Tulsa. It was a need she saw, a need that she shared with Dr. Kathy Cook, then the executive director of United Methodist Circle of Care.
Thanks to her vision, Pearl's Hope is now a reality.
In late September 2008, Pearl's Hope women's shelter opened at the Frances E. Willard Ministry Center in Tulsa. One week later, the facility was full and the waiting list began to grow.
While visiting the shelter that cared for homeless women, but could not accommodate their children, Ms. Thorpe said to Dr. Cook, "My hope is that someday, I will be able to provide for a place like this, but one that would be able to keep the women and their children together." With the help of David Battles, executive vice president of the Oklahoma United Methodist Foundation, Ms. Thorpe kept that hope alive and upon her death, her estate was placed with the Foundation to provide for just such a program. Circle of Care worked closely with Battles and the Foundation to ensure that Ms. Thorpe's dream would become a reality.
Pearl's Hope provides support for young mothers who, with their children, face the specter of homelessness. Thanks to the size and the spacious living environments of the cottages at the Frances E. Willard Ministry Center, we can offer hope to those that other ministries cannot. Most shelters cannot accept children still in the physical custody of their children. In those cases the children have to be placed with friends, relatives or even in foster care while the mothers work to get back on their feet. Many can accept only one or two children or only children of a certain age.
